In order to further support the regeneration of some of Sunderland's poorest communities, SES has increasingly taken on a project development and management role. As a result a number of major capital projects have been realised including the Hendon Co-op Centre, Sunderland Fish Quay, Raich Carter Sports Centre and Valley Road Community Primary School, all of which are making their own unique contribution to the regeneration of the area in which they are located.
Examples
The £6m Raich Carter Sports Centre. This independently managed sports facility incorporates an indoor 25m heated swimming pool, state of the art gym and sports hall. It also boasts a range of adult learning courses and has its own ITC suite. In just 12 months it has already attracted over 9,000 members
The £5m Valley Road Community Primary School. This is probably the most visible project of 'Back on the Map' - Hendon and the East End's £54m New Deal For Communities regeneration programme. Already cited as the way forward for primary education in the UK, it accommodates 'state of the art' facilities providing a rich and diverse environment for its pupils and local residents.
The Agency's commitment to community-led area regeneration has also seen SES take project development roles in Hendon 2000 Limited, Pennywell Community Business Limited, New View Pallion and Wearside First Credit Union. These projects are now independently managed and self-sustaining with SES providing supporting role if required. This includes financial management services, business plan development, funding application support, recruitment and personnel services.
