Over the years, SES has been a key player in a number of partnerships across the City of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear and the region.

North East Social Enterprise Partnership (NESEP)

NESEP was launched on 5th March 2003 and is a partnership of those involved in social enterprises development in the North East. It aim is to promote, develop and support social enterprise on a regional basis.

As well as SES, members include ComEcon (Newcastle), Social Firms North East, Development Trust Association, Economic Partnerships (Northumberland), Cleveland CDA, and Business Link (Durham).

NESEP is already recognised by One North East, the Regional Development Agency, as the voice for Social Enterprise, and aims to use it as its main vehicle to support and expand the Sector.

Enterprise for All
 
The Federation of North East Social Enterprises (FONSE) is being developed and promoted by NESEP for members of social enterprises to network on a sub regional and regional level and is so doing inform and drive the NESEP Agenda.

NESEP has produced the Social Enterprise Regional Action Plan which describes the existing social enterprise service provision as well as identifying social enterprise development opportunities.

NESEP is currently looking at the potential for regional work on:
Public sector procurement
Research and development on market opportunities for social enterprise
Start-up and expansion funds
Training and apprenticeships
NESEP is working with the region's Business Links to improve their understanding of the social enterprise sector and to secure greater user of their service by social enterprises. To this end NESEP has developed a training and mentoring programme on social enterprise aimed at Business Link staff.


Tyne & Wear Social Enterprise
Partnership (TWESEP)


NESEP is built around sub-regional partnerships. SES is a key partner of TWESEP which is leading on a three year social enterprise development.

Sunderland Community Enterprise Network

SES is a founder member of the Sunderland Community Enterprise Network (SCEN). SCEN brings together eight organisations which are all neighbourhood based and have a commitment to community economic development, they being:
Social Enterprise Sunderland (formed 1983)
Shiney Row Advice and Resource Project (formed 1982)
Sunderland North Community Business Centre (formed 1987)
Pennywell Community Business (formed 1989)
YMCA Enterprise in Action Houghton (formed 1993)
Thorney Close Action and Resource Centre (formed 1994)
GATES Grindon (formed 1994)
New View Pallion (formed 2000)

 


The SCEN Team
In 2002 the partners helped create 137 new businesses and find jobs for 1336 people in some of he most deprived areas in the City.

In September 2002 SCEN secured grant funding from the City Council, the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund and Single Regeneration Budget 6 which is to be used to help achieve the Network's aim of establishing a community enterprise facility in each of the City's principal neighbourhoods.
